Boston Section

On December 10th, the Boston section of AES held our annual holiday party and white elephant sale at a new venue, Donohue's Bar in Watertown. Our host was wonderful, the food good, and the company stimulating.

I'm always pleased to see friends at AES gatherings, but it was exceptionally nice to see faces commonly absent from these get togethers. One attendee's first words to me were "I finally filled out my application and paid my dues... I'm a member again!" While thinking about this, I'd also like to comment on the new email addresses that I've seen joining our mailing list recently. Welcome, and thanks for becoming involved in AES!

As usual, we had a merry crowd with varied conversations. For those of you who couldn't make it to the party, we missed seeing you! In between the tasty buffet courses (wow, those desserts were especially delicious), I floated between such wide-ranging discussions as speaker design, how many computers we have in our homes (and what they're running), current work projects, and patent information. I also joined in on the obligatory "good old days" versus "new technology" discussion. It's always fun to mingle the old with the new and see where things have been and where they're headed.

Apparently white elephants were a bit scarce this year. Maybe several people, like myself, had our herds diminished after a successful summer at the MIT flea. Just like at the flea, though, I couldn't help but look at those rare gems that did make it there. I walked away as the proud new owner of an old Opcode Studio 3 for the whopping sum of $10. This makes a fine addition to the rest of my 80's collection of synthesizers and other MIDI equipment.
