The Boston Section of the Audio Engineering Society met for our Annual Banquet on June 11, 2002. The event was held at Northeastern University's Henderson House in Weston, MA.
Forty-five section members and guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by an excellent meal. Music for the evening was provided once again by Anne Black, Chester Brezniak and Liz Skavish.
After dinner, we held our annual elections for section officers. The officers for the 02-03 season will be:
Chair - Jordan Tishler
Vice Chair - Eric Reuter
Secretary - Nelson Chadderdon
Returning as Treasurer - Joel Goldberg
Following elections and other section business, we were treated to our key-note presentation by legendary producer and engineer Elliot Scheiner.
Scheiner began his address with a historical account of the technology used at A&M Records in his early days working under Phil Ramone's supervision. He then segued into a discussion of the state of the art in recording technology, and the positive and negative effects that advances of the past three decades have had on the quality of end product. He also addressed the lack of quality education for engineers, noting that the current studio business model does not lend itself to type of mentor-student relationship that he had with Ramone.
Scheiner also spoke at length on the current trend to remix classic recordings in surround for release on DVD-A and SACD. He feels that concept itself is a good one, but that the process is often compromised by record companies' budget constraints. Scheiner has constructed a studio in his home for mixing surround projects that interest him, but have smaller budgets than his typical project.
Scheiner concluded with a question and answer session, and fielded many interesting questions from the attendees.
The banquet was, once again, a great success.
Have a great summer.
